This Empty Northern Hemisphere

This Empty Northern Hemisphere was released by Gregory Alan Isakov in 2009. I actually accidentally stumble upon his music when i was surfing a video clip in vimeo and I was instantly hooked by  the song.

He was originated from Johannesburg, South Africa. He is an indie folk rock singer. His music have a hints of influences from Leonard Cohen, a Canadian poet-singer songwriter which sang the amazing ‘Hallelujah’ which later covered by a lot of famous artist.

And also the influence of an American singer songwriter, Iron & Wine. If you watched Twilight before, the ending scene where Edward and Bella was dancing inside a gazebo the background song was sang by this singer called, Flightless Bird, American Mouth.

He had already released four album, Rust Colored Stones (2003), Songs for October (2005), That Sea, The Gambler (2007) and This Empty Northern Hemisphere (2009).

I only managed to get his latest album. I have been trying to search for his pervious three album but to no avail. I even try to find the source in pirate bay but the result come back as nil. Is so frustrating!

Anyway, my favourite song from this album is Dandelion Wine. Which is so soothing and relaxing. The whole song sound like you’re actually listening to a very vintage radio.

And below is the clip that I mention above which I totally adore it. I think the song and the video was perfectly matched. of course the original song was longer than 1.24mins which you can listen at here with lyric.

My another favourite from this album is If I go, I’m Goin but too bad I can’t find any clips in youtube. But if you wanna listen to it you can click here, the official site of Gregory Alan Isakov to listen.

La Roux

I not really sure whether La Roux is popular in Malaysia or not. Most probably some may ask who is that person?

Well, here are some info about La Roux. Actually La Roux is an English electropop duo made up of singer Eleanor Jackson and synth player, co-writer and co producer Ben Langmaid. La Roux actually means ‘the red-haired-one’.

la-roux

They 1st debuted their album 29 June 2009 self-titled, La Roux. In the album there were a total of 12 songs in it. They mostly focus in the electropop and wonkypop in this album with some influence of synthpop.

What is wonkypop some might asked? Well, have you ever heard of Mika? That’s how wonkypop sounds like. Wonky comes from British English word which means wrong, unsteady or awry.

Then what is synthpop? Synthpop is how The Killers sounds like. The famous hits by The Killers, “Mr.Brightside” and “Somebody Told Me” were both influence by synthpop and it was an international hits back in 2004.

Anyway back to La Roux, personally I don’t really like the 1st single, “Quicksand”. I prefer 2nd single better, “In for the Kill”. I like “Bulletproof” and “I’m Not Your Toy” too. Of course La Roux made a huge impression as her 2nd single currently is the 3rd biggest-selling single of 2009 in UK.

Like the lyric very much:

We can fight our desires
Oooh but when we start making fires
We get ever so hot
Oooh whether we like it or not
They say we can love who we trust
Oooh but what is love without lust?
Two hearts with accurate devotions
Oooh but what are feelings without emotions?

The whole album actually act like a full dosage of 80s sounds. It brings back the sound of the late 70s and 80s. Is like you travel back into time where you are in a disco wearing boot cut jeans and dance while the rainbow coloured lighting shower the whole disco-pub. With the infamous dance style, the point-to-the sky then the floor using your right hand while your left hand hold on to your waist.

So classy isn’t it. Haha…. I can’t imagine myself doing that gesture :P

Alexi Murdoch: Time Without Consequence

Alexi Murdoch is a London born singer-songwriter. Time Without Consequence is the first album released by Alexi Murdoch in June 6,2006.

By far, this is one of my favourite album. This is an indie-folk, alternative and acoustic genres album.

This is the kind of album that you play in a raining Sunday afternoon while you slouching yourself on the cozy couch with a comforter. Layback and listen to his distinctive soothing voice.

Personally, I really wish i could pick a personal favourite from this album. But I can’t because all the songs are equally amazing. This is not like those typical albums where only one or two songs are worth listening to. The whole album is worth listening to.

His songs had been featured in many Americans Series like The O.C, Grey’s Anatomy, House, Prison Break, Ugly Betty, Stargate Universe and many more. As a matter of fact, this is how I get to know about this artist. I was watching one of the tv shows above and when I heard his music. I instantly fall for his voice. Simply amazing.

All My days by Alexi Murdoch

Part of the lyric goes like this:

Well many a night I found myself with no friends standing near
All of my days
I cried aloud
I shook my hands
What am I doing here
All of these days
For I look around me
And my eyes confound me
And its just too bright
As the days keep turning into night

Something Beautiful is an unreleased song which I think might feature in his upcoming album, Towards the Sun.

Well, hope you folks will like his music like I did. :)
